‘Share Why’ with Dr. Beth Neuman, VMD

Dr. Beth Neuman, VMD

Dr. Beth Neuman, VMD, shares her “why” in vet med. Our goal is to inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals to find deeper meaning in their work and exemplify healthy self-care tips that allow us all to remain working & passionate in the field!

WHAT are a few of the biggest challenges you face in your work currently?

My biggest challenges currently are time management and confidence. Sometimes I don't feel like I'm the best person to do my job, especially when I fall behind on important tasks or following up with valuable clients. I try to offer myself grace and recognize at the end of the day I've given my very best and I deserve to rest.

WHY do I continue?

Early career veterinarians are my focus at this stage in my career. I've done everything from ER to GP to shelter to relief. Now I want to share my hard-earned wisdom with the new generations of veterinarians to ensure their success in this industry that I love. They reinvigorate me with their enthusiasm and new knowledge.

HOW do I continue?

I can't always turn off my phone, but I try to communicate when I will and will not be available in order to try to foster a mutual respect for boundaries. I spend time with my family and have resumed some of the hobbies I lost while I was so focused on working. I love to read and I started doing Yoga with a friend (accountability partner). I also try to eat mindfully - recognizing that when I'm reaching for junk food, I need to think about the why, because it's usually stress!

WHAT other words of encouragement would you like to provide to the veterinary community?

We are in this together. We need to stop tearing each other down and start building each other up. It takes so little effort to give a compliment - or to keep your mouth shut when you only have something negative to say. Every one of us gets up every day with the opportunity to be a force for good. Make a conscious choice to offer a smile to at least two people every day -- It might save a life.

Thank you for sharing with us your reasons why, Beth!
