MentorVet Mentor Spotlight: Dr. Lauren Redies, DVM

We are so excited to introduce you to one of our amazing mentors in MentorVet Leap, Dr. Lauren Redies, DVM!

Dr. Lauren Redies, DVM

MentorVet Leap Mentor

Her paired mentee shared recently: “Dr. Lauren Redies is amazing and earns all 5 stars and then some. She is easy to schedule with, talk to/acessible, she is non-judgemental, and supportive in every way. She is also keen on helping you network within the vet field depending on your interests. I felt very comfortable discussing my concerns as an early vet with her and felt her strong sense of empathy and found comfort in her advice.”

Lauren, tell us a little bit about your career journey. What do you currently do in veterinary medicine and how did you end up here?

I am currently a medical director and owner of two small animal practices. I've always been interested in the business aspects of veterinary medicine and love helping people starting their careers grow and flourish.

Why did you choose to be involved with MentorVet?

I decided to become a mentor because it was important for me to give back to the veterinary community and I wish a similar program had been available when I first graduated. I've been in a new vet's shoes where you're wracked by insecurity and fear. I want to show that these are all normal, valid feelings that we all go through and that they're not alone.

Will you share an example of something you and your mentee have discussed?

We discussed navigating changing jobs and finding work that is a good fit.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of being a mentor?

Watching a mentee grow and find joy in their work.

What is one thing that you have learned through your time mentoring for MentorVet?

Listening is so important for the mentorship experience and mentorship doesn't necessarily just mean giving advice.

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever received from a mentor or the best piece of advice that you have ever given?

If it's not going to matter in 5 years, don't worry about it for more than 5 minutes.

Would you recommend volunteering as a mentor for MentorVet to other veterinarians?

Definitely! It's been an incredibly rewarding experience to give back to the community.

What is your favorite self-care activity?

Baking.

Fun Fact:

I absolutely adore greyhounds!! They are my favorite dogs and I have a rescue named Pepper. I work with our local greyhound rescue in Chicago, Only Greyhounds.

Thank you for sharing with us, Dr. Redies!

We are so grateful for her support in MentorVet! We are onboarding new mentors all the time! — Check out some next steps to be a mentor here!
