March MentorVet Mentor of the Month: Chirjeev Kaur, DVM

We’d like to highlight one of our amazing mentors that is involved in our Spring 2022 MentorVet program.

Chirjeev “Nikki” Kaur, DVM

MentorVet Mentor

This month we are excited to announce that the March MentorVet Mentor of the Month is Chirjeev “Nikki” Kaur, DVM. Dr. Kaur is a 1996 graduate of Iowa State University Veterinary School and founded Hurstbourne Animal Hospital in 2000 in Louisville, KY.

Dr. Kaur holds a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University. She believes in the empowerment of women, especially women of color. She came to the United States from India 25 years ago and has a breadth of knowledge and experience as a veterinarian and businesswoman.

Dr. Kaur was chosen as the Mentor of the Month because of her commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the MentorVet community. She has provided ideas on how to make the MentorVet community more welcoming to all, and she has been an active member of our community — engaging in community events and regularly connecting with her mentees.

Read below to learn more about Dr. Kaur’s thoughts on MentorVet and her experience with mentoring.

Dr. Kaur, why did you choose to be involved with MentorVet?

I find it so rewarding. Talking to young doctors brings my youth back - I thoroughly enjoy it. Sometimes I really can see myself mentoring as a full-time job.

Please share an example of how you have helped your mentee?

I had the privilege of mentoring is a young doctor who was originally from the Philippines. She wanted to start her own practice but was nervous about all that it entails. I was able to help her discuss her insecurities regarding how to balance family and practice. We were able to have meaningful chats discussing this, and I believe that I am helping her to make the right decision.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of being a vet mentor?

Aside from mentoring my mentee, I have the chance to network with other doctors and individuals who have similar goals as mine. We have scheduled meetings where mentors can talk to each other and share experiences. I have found that every professional has their own life challenges - professional and personal. It is very important to have support where you can talk it out with like-minded people.

Would you recommend volunteering as a mentor with MentorVet to other veterinarians?

Definitely! I would recommend that other veterinarians try mentoring through this program. You feel fulfilled, and it brings purpose to what you do. If the mentor is really motivated, has the time, is mentally healthy, and wants to give back, it would be a great way to help the younger generation.

What is your favorite self-care activity?

I am a Sikh woman. My beliefs are: have faith in God, things happen in this life for a reason, people meet for a reason, and God has a plan for everyone. I practice Meditation regularly and focus on these ideas in my life daily.

Do you have anything else you would like to share?

People have asked me, “How do you handle family, business, and social life?” My answer is:

Women, don’t be afraid. This society will scare you more if you are weak. Ladies, walk like a lioness. Lionesses support each other on the hunt. They are symbols of divine sisterhood - women supporting women.

Thank you, Dr. Kaur!

Dr. Kaur is an amazing mentor in our veterinary mentorship program. We are so grateful to have her! Please visit our volunteer page if you are interested in learning more about how to become a mentor in the program!
