Ashlee Redmond, DVM
Dr. Redmond worked on her capstone project called PACKS (personalized autonomous career knowledge and support) mentorship program for Petco.
Dr. Redmond and Dr. Debbie Pettit put together a 6-month training program to support the growth and development of our mentor doctors for Vetco Total Care. The program included topics such as: DISC personality type, building trust, communication skills such as empathy, reflective listening, wellbeing, change management, giving and receiving feedback, and coaching for belonging. Each month the mentors completed pre-work to learn more about the topic and met virtually monthly to discuss key concepts as a group and apply them to their mentoring scenarios. The goal of this program is to help our mentor doctors gain and practice the skillset they need to help support the unique needs of early career veterinarians.

The program’s cornerstone is flexibility, with formal structure for self-guided skills and medical information acquisition as well as fluid and spontaneous coaching through the challenges encountered in practice. The program is intentionally malleable to best meet the needs of a variety of mentees. From new graduates just entering practice to experienced veterinarians adapting to a new practice home.

Dr. Andrea Monnig worked on her capstone project called NERD Elevate Summit.
The New ER Doctor (NERD) Elevate Summit is a 1.5-day in-person meeting for NERD Medical Directors and Clinical Instructors to come together to learn about mentorship best practices, feedback frameworks, and communication techniques. The meeting is filled with presentations on foundational mentorship skills, opportunities for self-reflection, and small group breakout sessions focused on common mentorship painpoints. The goal of the program is to provide our NERD mentors the skills that they need to deliver a high-quality mentorship experience to our NERDs, who are recent graduates or clinicians making a career change into emergency medicine. The in-person setting helps to foster peer-to-peer mentorship between NERD Medical Directors and Clinical Instructors across the country in an effort to support each other through the NERD training process.

Morgan Callahan, VMD
Dr. Morgan Callahan worked on her capstone project called Rocket Boost: A Whole Team Approach Leveling Up Program.
The Rocket Boost program integrates into the final two months of VEG’s six-month NERD (New ER Doctor) curriculum and transforms recent emergency doctors into peer mentors by assigning them to teach at least two teammates in critical clinical procedures at their home hospitals. Designed to reinforce learning through structured peer-to-peer and whole team approach teaching, it aims to strengthen retention, foster collaboration, and elevate both mentees’ and new doctors’ leadership and clinical confidence. Equipped with standardized resources (checklists, templates, feedback forms) and embedded within VEG hospital settings, the program scales mentorship impact and maximizes returns on practical skills training.
Have questions about the program?
“MentorVet has not only developed a unique platform to help fill the mentoring gap that currently exists within veterinary medicine, but it has also really 'professionalized' the process of mentorship through training, connection, and community. This has provided valuable skills and guidance for me to be more effective personally, and overall, it results in a much better experience for both the mentors and mentees involved”
