Dr. Sam Romano, DVM MBA ACC

MentorVet Tech Mentor and Team Facilitator

Our team shared: “Sam is thoughtful, kind, and respectful. Every interaction with him feels intentional. If you know Sam, you know that he is a fantastic listener and through conversations, he quickly makes you feel valued and more confident. We are so grateful that he chooses to support our efforts at MentorVet.”

Sam, tell us a little bit about your career journey. What do you currently do in veterinary medicine and how did you end up here?

Most of my veterinary career was in small animal emergency at a specialty hospital in Denver. In 2008, I began coaching in the CSU communications laboratory for 3rd year veterinary students. As a CSU instructor, I have facilitated in the mentoring program and mentored veterinary students. I began mentoring early and mid-career veterinarians during the COVID pandemic. MentorVet has been an excellent way for me to continue helping others through mentoring. .

Why did you choose to be involved with MentorVet?

A MentorVet graduate made me aware of the program. A major turning point for me was interviewing MentorVet graduates as part of a post-program survey. The positive impact MentorVet had on their lives and careers was truly amazing. I wanted to be part of that change.

Will you share an example of something you and your mentee have discussed?

A mentee had difficulty stepping into a leadership role as an associate veterinarian. She struggled with imposter syndrome and how to be an effective team leader. MentorVet helped her develop the awareness and confidence to move forward. It was great to be part of her transition into a new role.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of being a mentor?

My favorite part of mentoring is to see others step into their own greatness. It is also a way to pay it forward and honor those that gave so much to me. It's a great feeling.

What is one thing that you have learned through your time mentoring for MentorVet Tech?

I can’t give away something I don’t have. It is impossible to mentor others in wellness without practicing myself.

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever received from a mentor or the best piece of advice that you have ever given?

The best advice I received from a mentor is to always be true to my heart and values.

Would you recommend volunteering as a mentor for MentorVet to other veterinarians?

I strongly recommend becoming a MentorVet mentor. MentorVet provides a safe space for mentees and mentors to learn, grow, and connect.

What is your favorite self-care activity?

Anything related to fly fishing and rivers.

Fun Fact:

I still use the bamboo fly rod my grandfather brought to the United States as an Italian immigrant.

Thank you for sharing with us, Dr. Romano!
